I'm sure you have at some time been stopped by a guy in a day-glo vest holding a giant lollipop with the word STOP written on it. I have found myself although successful in MLM to be sat metaphorically at the same road sign waiting for the GO. I'm wondering how many people out there in their MLM business's are sat at there own STOP signs. Despite the best training and support, great personal coaching thousands of agents are held up at STOP. I want to investigate a little about what makes capable, smart, otherwise successful people STOP doing the things they have been told will make them successful in their chosen business. Assuming that the agent has already found a successful sponsor, someone they can believe in. A Credible Upline they will be sharing their business system, and hopefully recommending information to help with the philosophy behind success. The package of training should/will be a System. It will be Simple (note i didn't say easy) and duplicatable.
The most successful systems create the most success. It sounds obvious doesn't it? Now when it comes to building a MLM business then being party to the most successful system will determine to a large part your results and consequent success. Most 'teams' will have a successful 'upline' who will share their system and be looking for someone in their team to duplicate their system and pass it on to their 'downline'.
Wow that was a lot of jargon. The reason I started this article, as a successful MLM entrepreneur I was lucky enough to study the strategy and techniques used by the number one distributor within our company's organization. It was soon apparent that the quality of some of the individuals working within this team was incredible. Company Directors and professionals from all walks of life were involved and looking for the Holy Grail of a residual walk away income.
The training was second to none 'The System' that had been responsible for so much success in the past was passed down in bite size pieces consumed by hungry for success individuals and couples. The philosophy behind success was debated and shared along with knowledge from great books on Attitude, Focus, Goal Setting, Motivation.
Successful upline know how important it is to care about their people. Contact, Care and Communication is a catchphrase and it's understood that people dont care how much you know, until they know how much you care. The question i want answering is Why despite all the training and Strategy despite hours of investment in a new MLM business with the best 'System' are people so frustrated with their results?. I have compiled a list:-
* Knowledge
* Confidence
* Competence
* Belief in themselves
* Belief in the system
* Action
* The market
Lets look at this list in more detail.
1. Knowledge
There are some people who cant get enough knowledge! they come to every meeting, read every book, listen to motivational programs and yet do not produce results. Yet other people are I.O.F. (Ignorance on Fire) they know very little technical knowledge yet produce great results. All the universities in their aggregate contain all the knowledge mankind had accumulated over the years. That knowledge does not bring about success. The phrase 'educated derelict' is almost a proverb and professors at these institutions have little money. So the resource of knowledge alone is NOT enough, In fact it's the application of knowledge that will bring about change. Of course it's far easier to learn than it is to act, just as it's easier to preach than it is to practice.
2. Confidence & Competence
A few weeks ago my son now 15 years old, was sat next to me as I was driving to the local market, he made a comment about soon he would be driving and how easy it looked. Well from his uneducated position I can see where he's coming from. I mean he sees his parents casually jump into a vehicle and drive with the minimum (it appears) of effort. he does not see the principles, practices and techniques that have been learned over years of experience, he is UNCONSCIOUSLY INCOMPETENT. That is he does not comprehend what he does not know.
As we learn those practices , those techniques and strategy's unique to your system you start to become CONSCIOUS of what is involved in creating the results that your looking for in your chosen opportunity. Just like my son when he is sat next to his driving instructor and realises that he has a clutch and an accelerator pedal to operate at the same time as looking where he is going, he will wonder how it's possible to do all these things at the same time. He has become CONSCIOUSLY INCOMPETENT.
Practice, practice practice, soon by practicing our new skills we start to become competent. My son will soon be driving! Unlike an experienced driver he will approach junctions with cation and will be thinking about what gear he is in and checking his mirrors and looking for road marking to aid his journey. He will become CONSCIOUSLY COMPETENT. This will be the most familiar territory for new agents in their new business's. Aware of what needs to be done or said, yet caution and fear will curb their implementation of knowledge.
Ultimately though my son will be getting behind the wheel of his car, setting off to work negotiating the hazards of the daily commute, and five minutes after setting off he wont even remember backing out of the drive. He has become UNCONSCIOUSLY COMPETENT. This is the stage that will come after investing the due time and effort implementing those new skills over a period of time until it becomes second nature. Like driving your car on autopliot, the same can happen within your new business.
3. Belief in Themselves
Belief is a biggie. We are all to a degree programmed by the constant barrage of media, TV, Radio, friends, newspapers and books. Despite placing success on a pedestal, something to look at but not touch, most people will have a belief in themselves somewhere commensurate with their current position. Success seems to follow belief, with success comes other challenges which I would cover in another article.
Some of us are lucky enough to have had great parents or teachers. Great mentors to pass on there philosophies and belief to there children and or students. Some of us were not so lucky, and it's in this great business arena if you wish to become a student, change your philosophy, attitude's and ultimately life, there are mentors people willing to share their knowledge openly and for free.
4. Belief in the System
The system used by your successful (credible) upline is proven. It will be the system that they have used to bring about the success they now enjoy. Some systems are older than others and here you have to be a good student. I recently spent a year following a proven system that I really didn't beleieve in. I found it produced limited results for a great deal of effort. After 1 year I won an award for the highest growth within the top performing team in the whole company!, HOWEVER let me introduce a caveat. If your working a system that is 10 years and is still producing great results then Fantastic. If the system isn't producing fantastic results and a great deal of effort is required for very little results then the system still works but isn't very efficient. In this world now it's about efficiency. We have heard phrases like
'It isn't how many hours you put in, but what you put into those hours''
Time is your most valuable commodity, once spent it has gone forever. Research, research, research!. Your beleief level will increase as your results increase. Your results will increase as you learn and implement more skills into your business. DO NOT FOLLOW ! Become a GOOD STUDENT instead.
5. Action
Action they say is the 'clue' to all success. As i have mentioned before knowledge alone is not enough. I recently read a book titled Talent Alone is Never Enough. So if talent & knowledge isn't enough then we are looking for as many 'clue's' as possible. Throught this article I have mentioned that action is the one determining factor in all success. It very rarely is one giant action that made one a success overnight. We as a people tend to celebrate success by placing emphasis on the lottery ect where the chance of overnight success is (however tiny) a possibility for those that play. This reinforces the belief that success is an overnight thing.
The real success is created over many days, weeks, years of consistently implementing those actions that we have been shown or that we have researched on a daily basis. Continual application of a success plan broken down into daily tasks and repeated on a daily basis will inevitably lead to a better result than leaving it to the lottery of chance.
Successful people will have determined there success in the quiet of their work, when no one was looking and their was no cheering crowd or adulation. Daily application of the skills developed, consistently over time.
6. The Market
We are all in 'The Market' trading our skills for the things we want and to provide for our family's. In order to make ourselves more attractive to the market then we need to become more attractive!. How do we become more attractive? Well we need to learn more skills period!. The more skills we have the more attractive we become. Now many of these skills are conventional and we will always need doctors, solicitors ect.These skills will certainly attract financial success however there are other skills not taught in our state educational facilities, people skills, personal philosophy, attitude, mentorship. These things hopefully are granted as gifts from parents and family. But so often in today's market Mum & Dad are so busy making a living they have very little time for passing on these important skills, in fact these skills seem to be missing from many many parents today as they never had the skills shared from there parents.
In today's market the knowledge is available! it's up to the individual to recognize what they need to work on. If it's skills then get them, If it's personal philosophy then get a book find a mentor someone who can help you determine what you want.
And remember this, that true success isn't what you accumulate over the course of your business and personal life but about what you become along the journey!.
Let me leave you with a great quote from King Solomon 'He who walks with the wise shall become wise, whilst he who walks with fools shall suffer harm'
